Markus Grasser
I have been passionate about practical ways and theories/frameworks to integrate the whole spectrum of human experience and existence from physical to emotional to mental and spiritual since my teenage years.
I started with meditation, yoga and tai chi when I was 17, studied various forms of massage and commenced my training in shiatsu (a japanese form of meridian based bodywork that is rooted in the classical teachings of chinese medicine) age 20 in 1992.
I am especially interested in integrating the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine (in its various forms from : Tai Chi to Shiatsu to Chinese Herbal Medicine) with the insights of modern psychology into child development (and how the various stages of development are related to the meridians/acupuncture channels of Chinese medicine) and the various contemplative traditions (especially Buddhism).
I started my formal training in Oriental Medicine in the form of shiatsu and graduated in 1997. Additionally I undertook intensive study and practice with several well known teachers: Michael Rose (who studied with Shizuto Masunaga, the founder of “Zen Shiatsu”) - study and assisting on all of his classes for a period of 3 years, Bill Palmer “Movement Shiatsu" (www.seed.org) post graduate training for 4 1/2 years and Tim Mulvagh:“CBS-Classically Based Shiatsu”(www.cbshiatsu.co.uk) - classes and supervision for 7 years.
In 2000 I founded the European Shiatsu School Brighton (www.shiatsu.net) and have been teaching all the subjects on the Practitioner Diploma course ever since.
I also teach regularly a series of postgraduate Shiatsu courses european wide.
I gained my ‘Licentiate in Oriental Herbal Medicine (Lic.OHM)’ at the ‘London College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine’.
From 1998-2009 i practiced from the Avicenna Centre for Chinese Medicine in Brighton, U.K, which was founded by Mazin Al-Khafaji a worldrenowned specialist in Dermatology with whom i have trained and completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Dermatology. Other major influences to my practice were Peter Deadman (Co-Author with Mazin of 'The Manual of Acupuncture') and Andrew Flowers both of whom also practiced from the same clinic.
I am a member of the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine (RCHM) and I commonly treat with a combination of Shiatsu and Chinese medicine.
Practically, my particular interrest is to help you to understand the relationships between your dis-ease and your body, emotions, posture, environment etc. in a more embodied way so it will make truly ‘sense’ to you and therefore also the treatment.
Also, I believe that motivated by this insight, it will be much easier for you to put certain recommendations on lifestyle, diet, exercise (I will often teach certain Taichi’/‘Qi Gong’ movements (chinese health exercises) ) into practice.
I now live with my wife and our 2 daughters in the south of France near Grasse and divide my practice between Brighton, U.K and the Cote d'Azur.
